May 5, Sa - Jo had problems using the electric Jennifer's Eyes. breast pump - we called Kathy Sivertson - she will order us a new one.  We went to see Jennifer at 1:00 PM.  We talked with Dr. Player for a bit.  Dr. Orenstein introduced us to Dr. Rubin (3742) and Mr. Strom (3758).  Dr. Rubin is from the 4th floor Comprehensive Care Unit of Metro - he will follow Jennifer as an outpatient once she leaves the NICU.  Jennifer had both her eyes open.  Dr. Rubin felt that Jennifer's eyes were a bit on the small size, but that should not be anything to worry about.  He also thought that her ears were a bit strange, but did not elaborate.

We expressed our concern Jo holding Jennifer. for Jennifer's respiratory problems, and asked if we should buy a special monitor for Jennifer for when she gets to come home.  Dr. Rubin said that we should not worry about buying a monitor, because even though Jennifer is having respiration problems, her breathing is strong and rapid, and that he felt that she would never have problems with her not breathing.  HR 110-130 / RR 40-70 / 02 off.  We left for a while to pick up the new breast pump from Kathy Sivertson.  We came to visit with Jennifer some more - Jo got to hold her for a while.

May 6, Su - We picked up Jo's mom, Nasal Suctioning. and went to visit Jennifer.  Jo held her for - Jennifer was asleep most of the time.  We took Jo's mom home, and came back to visit Jennifer again.  Jo held her again - this time she was awake.  Her heart monitor seems to be malfunctioning.  The nurses say that they have a lot of trouble with the pick-ups, because they are just not designed for such small infants.   The nurse clapped Jennifer with the 'face' piece of her 02 'bag', and then Jennifer was suctioned through her nose with a long thin tube.  That was the first time I had ever seen that procedure performed.  The nurse suctioned out a large amount mucus and some coagulated blood about an inch long.  Her weight is now 2780 grams.   Plaster Cast. She is not on 02 anymore, and she has her eyes open.  Jennifer has developed a real bad diaper rash on her butt, and the cast has caused a lump to appear on her back where the cast rubs against her back.  One would think that before you put an infant into a body cast you would make provisions for properly being able to change wet diapers - all they did was to leave a long narrow opening where a dipper could be placed, but there was no way provided for containing the contents; thus, there was no way to prevent the inside of the cast from getting wet.  Once we got back home again, Jo used the new breast pump again - it was a bit Cumbersome, but she got about an ounce.
