Jun   4,  M - Talked with Dr. Barrett on the phone.  She does not know why the deep vein I/V in Jennifer's right arm got infected and had to be removed, but Jennifer must have a new one.   I gave the ok for a new deep vein I/V over the phone.  I tried to call Dr. Rubin, but he is on vacation until wed (x3742).  I called Dr. Ayala to see if he is still on Jennifer's case - not in - left msg - he called back - he said that Metro works with a closed staff, and he can not get involved until she is discharged.  He knew Jennifer's current status by the time that he called me back - he must have called Metro.  He was not there when I first called, and I left a message for him to call me.  At this point Jennifer's discharge is undeterminable, and Dr. Ayala can not get involved (888-5515).

I tried to call OBT's counselor Phyllis Bullock, but she did not return my call from this morning nor from this afternoon.  She must be out.  Jo called me from Metro to let me know that Jennifer's new deep vein I/V was in place.  The operation took about two hours (11:30), but the doctor told Jo that Jennifer did not have to be anesthetized.  The I/V goes through her scalp, down her neck under the skin and then into her chest.  After work We went to see Jennifer again.  Wt - 3000 / HR 110-120 / RR -80-90 / 02 - 21% (room air). Her temp is 36.8.  She seems a bit more congested, but when given a nipple, she has a strong suck.  She is not too active - she only opens her eyes once in a while.  If - they did not anesthetize her for the operation, they must have given her something to make her so drowsy.

I asked the nurse about a small pimple type boil on Jennifer's left eye Eyelid Boil. - the nurse said that she would ask the doctors about it.  When the nurse was changing Jennifer's dressing, she used a pair of pointed scissors - if the baby were to jerk suddenly, an accident could occur.  When X-rays are taken of babies, all the nurses get behind a lead shield, but the other babies next to the one being X-rayed are not shielded in any way.  After we got home, I called the NICU to check on Jennifer's blood-gas count - none taken this shift (3-11).

Jun   5,  Tu - Called the NICU in the morning to check on Jennifer's condition.  Temp - 36.7 / "Mucus - large" / RR - 42-48 / HR - 106-118/ Wt -3010 / Blood gas - none taken/ Alert - yes.  Jo told me that yesterday the surgeon told her that Jennifer's metabolism is down.  I told Sue that I definitely need help in handling my current situation with Jennifer.  Later in the day I spoke with Phyllis, she set up an appointment for me with Peter Beebe at 65 Erieview on the 7th fl.  at 2:00 PM on Friday June 8.

Worked over time to help Al Jasky with a production problem.  Jo went to see Dr. Garver about allergies.  She is allergic to grass mold, but not to dog hair.  Jo spent time at Metro with Jennifer - got to hold her for about two hours.  She spoke with a doctor from Comp Care about the fact that yesterday Dr. King told her that Jennifer has pulmonary tension. That information came out of the blue.

After work we both went back to visit with Jennifer again.  They had her in the treatment room for insertion of an I/V into her right leg.  The purpose of the I/V was for ease in injection of antibiotics.  When Jennifer got out of the treatment room, the nurse clapped and suctioned her.  During the suctioning process, the suction tube accidentally got into Jennifer's right eye.  Jo got to hold her for about 45 min.  We stayed from 8:00 to 9:30 PM.  Pete and Penny dropped by with the kids.  Tammy gave Jo some flowers.  After we went home, we called the NICU again at about 10:30 PM.  The nurse said that Jennifer looked fine, and that no blood gasses were taken because the doctors felt that it was not necessary based upon how Jennifer looked.
