May 9, W - Picked up Jo's mom on my way home from work.  I went to see Jennifer with Jo and both grandmas.  Jennifer seems a bit better - she is down to 25% 02, and the pressure on the respirator is down from yesterday's pressure. Files & Charts.  I talked with Dr. Cromer, and asked her if I may see the nurse's chart from Section 4B on Jennifer from May 6 & 7.  She said absolutely not.  That would be entirely out of the question.  I have no right to see that information.  She indicated to me that in her opinion, parents should not be told things such as that because it only tends to confuse them.  She said that I should not even be looking at the NICU floor nurse's reports on Jennifer.  She side-stepped most of my questions about what had happened on 4B, and said that I was not listening to Fistula between the Esophagus and Trachea. her.  My voice was not calm, but hers became loud - all I wanted to know was what had happened.  Jo did not feel that I was asking in an improper manner.  When I asked her again what she thought the problem was, she said that she knew exactly what the problem was.  She said that Jennifer had an 'H' F istula between her Trachea and Esophagus.  That when she upchucked some food, the food passed through the Fistula into her lungs.  When I asked, if it was not possible, that since she was immobilized, and on her back at a 30 degree angle, that perhaps, the upchucked food had no place to go except to the back of her throat; thus, cutting off her air supply, or maybe even getting into her lungs that way because of her weakened condition.  Dr. Cromer said that I did not know what I was talking about - that Jennifer definitely had an 'H' Fistula, and that even if she had been standing on her head, the food would have passed through that Fistula.

Dr. Cromer said that a Fistula was hard to find, but that she was positive that it was there, and that the Fistula would have to be corrected surgically. Infant Bronchoscopy.  The thought of Jennifer having to go through surgery was terrifying because of all that she had already gone through.  I also asked Dr.Cromer why, when Jennifer swallowed, her normal mouth secretions did not pass through the fistula - she never did answer that question. It turned out that they spent about two weeks trying to find that Fistula using various methods - the last of which was a Bronchoscopy, which proved once and for all that there was no Fistula.  So then what did happen the night of May 7- no one wants to respond to that question.

I wrote to Dr. Rubin twice asking those same questions, but received absolutely no response. Now after further inquiry, the hospital administration tells me that Dr. Rubin is in South Africa.  We stayed at the NICU till 8:00 PM that night.  Just before we left one of the nurse's talked with Dr. Cromer, and after that talk, Dr. Cromer told us that if we did not believe what she said, that we could talk to Dr. King about it.  One of the things that bothers me the most, is that Dr. King kept telling me that she was concerned that Jennifer must be fed in the normal manner soon if she is to survive, but Jennifer could not be fed in the normal manner while they were trying to look for that elusive Fistula for two weeks.

May 10, Th - Had a bad night's sleep.  Dr. King from Metro called - we had a long talk. She said that personalities sometimes get in the way, and that residents put in long hours. Dr. King said that they are doing everything they can for Jennifer, she also read a few excerpts from the nurse's report on 4B.  Dr. King said that I could call and talk to her at anytime - even at home.  That made me feel a lot better - little did I know at that time that I would have been better off pressing for more information on Jennifer's problems on 4B, instead of believing Dr. King's reassurances.  We went to see Jennifer with both grandmas.  She is on 25% O2 thru her nose.
